If you’re in a service-based business, like medical or dental practices, salons and spas, home or car repair businesses, there are new options available from Google to improve your online presence using your Google My Business profile.
Google announced they have expanded their My Business menu editor tool, something previously only available to restaurants and other food-based businesses, into a broader version that allows any service business to list their own “menu” of services they provide. Different categories of business will be able to add links and descriptions of their services as the feature rolls out fully, but for health and beauty businesses, the changes are already in place.
Why You Should Add Your Services
Adding your services will give potential clients or patients who visit your Google My Business listing the ability to read what services you offer under the Services section of each profile. A significant chunk of people who search for local businesses simply go to the GMB profile instead of your own website. So, this gives you a chance to detail more about what you do and what you can offer those folks, increasing the likelihood they’ll click through to your site or give you a call.
While the services you add don’t currently appear anywhere obvious in search results, that may be the eventual outcome. (Google is notoriously tight-lipped about what they plan for the future.) In the meantime, we recommend that our health and beauty industry clients take action to add their services, because giving Google more information about your business is never a bad idea. The more thorough the information you provide is, the more likely you are to have a competitive advantage in search results.
It’s fair to assume these new service listings will help Google develop better local service search results, a big focus of theirs currently. But in the SEO world, there’s further speculation that the listings also might help Google serve up voice search results in Google Home and other location-based products.
It’s also possible they may eventually show up in “local pack” search results as Google-confirmed services a business offers, similar to the way specific products now appear for retail and product-based businesses.
How to Edit Your GMB Profile
To update your Google My Business profile with the services your business offers, first log in to your profile. Then, follow these steps.
- Click on the Info tab.
- Go to the Services section.
- Click the pencil icon next to “Add attributes”.
- Add sections to organize and classify your services in the right categories.
- Add each service’s name and description under “Add item”.
- Add any pricing information for each service.
- Click “Apply” when you’re done making changes.
If you have more than one location, this process should be repeated for each of them. For more information on editing your My Business profile, go here. Google did note in their announcement that this feature is only in English currently, and only available in English-speaking locales, though that could change in the future.
Service businesses should also note that if they use a third-party service for ordering or booking, Google may automatically use those links and not allow you to edit them. If you have trouble with this situation, contact your third-party provider or their technical support team to have the issue fixed.
